König Sigurd's Brautfahrt

[So that einst]1 König Sigurd Ring, 
Als todt sein Lieb, das bleiche: 
Er rüstete sein Drachenschiff, 
Trug selbst hinan die Leiche, 

Und legte auf den Holzstoß dort 
Die Braut im Festgewande; 
Die loh'nde Fackel warf er dann 
Hinein zum Todtenbrande. 

D'rauf setzte er an's Steuer sich 
Und ließ die Segel schwellen, 
Indeß der Abendsonne Gold 
Lag auf dem Kamm der Wellen.  

Noch einmal küßt' er Alfsolds Stirn', 
Winkt' Abschied den Genossen,  --  
Und meerwärts flog das Schiff dahin, 
Von Feuer rings umschlossen! 

Des Abendrothes Schein verging; 
Doch flammten fern die Fluthen!  --  
Das war die Brautfahrt Königs Ring. 
Weiß Niemand, wo sie ruhten!
