Sous les flocons de [givre]1 et le baiser lunaire 
De la nuit, où fuyaient des quais ouatés de blanc, 
Frêle, à peine esquissée en un contour tremblant, 
Elle dansait dans l'ombre au pied d'un réverbère, 

Tout en gaze d'argent, si [blême et si légère]2 
Qu'on [eût]3 dit de la neige animée en tombant, 
Et qui dansait pour plaire à l'enfant, sur un banc 
Oublié dans ce coin de Paris solitaire. 

Le nourrisson, pauvre être aux lèvres violettes, 
Râlait, quand l'ayant pris entre ses mains squelettes 
La danseuse chanta: « Do, do, do, l'enfant dort. » 

Et dans cette berceuse aveugle et sans prunelle, 
Pâle, ayant reconnu la nourrice éternelle. 
Je saluai très bas la danseuse la Mort.
