Per una strada ripida

Il bambino che penzola in collo alla mamma
Che l'ha ben coperto prima di darlo
Fuori al freddo acuto,
Mi guarda mentre il passo lo tentenna.
Su e giù, su e giù, la strada irta è di breccia,
E la testina cionca su e giù.
Ma quegli occhietti, non senza malizia
Guardano me che m'arrampico dietro;
Dicon: "Tu soffi, ed io salgo portato.
Tu sei vestito poco ed io son caldo.
Tu sei brutto e sparuto, ed io grassotto.
Tu vedi storto, che porti gli occhiali,
Ed io vedo come il passerotto.
Tu sei solo, e cammini come il vecchio,
Con me è la mamma che mi regge e bacia.
La tua strada finisce in un burrone,
La mia diventa sempre bella più."
E la testina cionca su e giù.
