Il canto mio

Voi mi chiedete un canto,
ma il cerco invan nel povero mio core;
solo vi abbonda il pianto...
la mia canzone è quella del dolore.

Ed or se lo volete,
invocherò la triste anima mia;
ma poi vi stancherete
d'un canto eterno di melanconia.

Un po' di ben io pure
ho chiesto un tempo, a una gentil visione,
 e scordai le sventure
per dire ad Essa qualche mia canzone.

Ma un giorno, lo sapete?
Quella immagine gentil m'ha infranto il core,
e d'allora, credete;
il canto mio è quello del dolore.
