Gute Nacht
Language: German (Deutsch)
Gute Nacht und sanfte Ruh
sei euch Lieben nun beschieden,
schließt getrost die Augen zu,
schlafet all' in Gottes Friesen,
dessen Auge für euch wacht,
gute Nacht!

Gute Nacht, schlaf Herz auch du,
wiege dich in süßen Schlummer
und vergiß in sel'ger Ruh
allen Gram und allen Kummer,
den du wachend dir gemacht,
gute Nacht!

Gute Nacht, mag Gottes Hut
jeden Müden sanft umschweben,
der in Schlafes Armen ruht,
bis ihm neu mit lichtem Leben
Gottes Morgen wiederlacht,
gute Nacht!

Note: the original text assigned to this melody may have been by Heinrich Elmenhorst. Later (it is not known when), the words of a Wilhelm Osterwald were given to the melody, but it is not known for certain that it is the same Wilhelm Osterwald mentioned below.
