by Gundalene Elisabeth Wille, née Sloman (1809 - 1893), as Elise Wille

Gut' Nacht
Language: German (Deutsch)
Gut' Nacht, gut' Nacht, mein Leben
Du schöne, holde Maid!
Dich soll ein Traum umschweben
Von lauter Wonn' und Freud',

Wie Thau auf Veilchen nieder,
So senke sich die Ruh'
Auf deine Augenlieder,
Und schließ' sie lächelnd zu.

Schlaf' ein, o schlaf' in Frieden,
Viel tausend Engelein
Sind allzumal beschieden,
Dir Schutz und Schirm zu sein.

Und Gottes Sterne blinken
Herab in sel'ger Ruh';
Sie blinken dir und winken:
"Wir wachen, schlafe du!"

Nun schweigt und ruht das Leben;
Die Liebe hofft und wacht.
O du mein Glück und Streben,
Du schöne Maid, gut' Nacht!

Confirmed with Deutschlands Dichterinnen, ed. by Abraham Voss, Düsseldorf: Vollmann und Schmidt, 1847, pages 475 - 476.

Note: modern spelling rules would use "Augenlider" instead of "Augenlieder"
