by Caroline Pichler (1769 - 1843)

Karmel‑Legende
Language: German (Deutsch)
Mathilde:
 Dort, wo in reine Lüfte
 der Karmel sich erhebt,
 der Hauch der niedern Grüfte
 nie seine Stirn umschwebt,

 hoch überm Erdgetümmel
 lebt eine Frauenschar,
 nah dem verwandten Himmel,
 zu dem ihr Streben war.

 Dorthin will ich mich flüchten,
 dort ist der Ruhe Port!
 Der Kampf der strengen Pflichten
 verstummt am heil'gen Ort.

 Dort löschen diese Gluten,
 dort schweigt der rege Schmerz,
 dort darf es still verbluten,
 dies arme, kranke Herz!

 Und du sollst mich geleiten,
 an deiner treuen Hand
 will ich hinüber schreiten
 in jenes bess're Land!

 Still will ich mich versenken
 in meiner Liebe Pein
 und deinem Angedenken
 mein traurig Dasein weih'n.
