Brève est hélas ! la vie :
Je n'ai point connu ces bonheurs d'antan.

Des voix de la forêt magique,
Des chants au crépuscule, épars dans la brise ...
Des parfums enivrants de jeunesse et d'amour,
Un printemps fleurant les roses ...
Délices, féerie, volupté !
Un cher visage auréolé
des irisations sereines des beaux soirs ...

Pourquoi donc ces choses
Ont-elles un air d'ailleurs,
Une senteur d'au-delà ?
Pourquoi la hantise ardente
D'une ancienne félicité
Me donne-t'elle ces doux regrets ?

Ah ! n'est-ce pas que ces rêves d'or
Sont les reflets
Des extases vécues avant cette vie ?
