Wenn dräuend den kleinen, gebrechlichen Kahn 
Umwirbeln die heulenden Wogen, 
Wenn wild durch die Segel und Taue und Raa'n 
Heran kommt der Sturmwind geflogen  --  
Dann strahlet dem Schiffer des Leuchtthurmes Licht, 
Als riefe es tröstend:  Verzage nur nicht! 
Verzage nur nicht in dem Wetter, dem Graus! 
Kopf oben, Kopf oben und harre nur aus! 

Daß Kümmerniß Dir nicht das Leben vergällt, 
Verzweiflung Dein Dasein nicht kränket, 
Hat Gott einen Leuchtthurm, der's Dunkel erhellt, 
Hinein in das Herz dir gesenket. 
Er heißet:  der wackere, männliche Muth, 
Der helle stets leuchtet, stets weiß, was er thut, 
Der tröstend im Sturme des Lebens stets spricht: 
Kopf oben, Kopf oben!  Verzage nur nicht!
