possibly by Nikolaus Lenau (1802 - 1850)

Du hast mir viel gegeben
Language: German (Deutsch)
Du hast mir viel gegeben,
du schenktest mir dein Herz;
du nahmst mir alles wieder
und ließest mir den Schmerz.

Du zeigtest mir den Himmel
und seiner Sonne Pracht;
du hast ihn schnell geschlossen,
und um mich her ist Nacht.

Ich ziehe nun ins Weite,
Gott schenke mir die Ruh',
wenn mich in fernem Lande
deckt Mutter Erde zu.

Wenn's an des Tales Felsen
wie leise Seufzer klagt,
so denk', 's ist meine Stimme,
die „Lebewohl“ dir sagt.

Note: the Bote & Bock edition of Max von Lüttwitz's song attributes the text to Lenau, but we have not been able to discover a primary source for this poem. The first stanza appears alone as a quoted, unattributed song in the novel Trudchens Heirat by Bertha Behrens under the pseudonym Wilhelmine Heimburg, first published in 1884.
