by Robert Hamerling (1830 - 1889)

Vernichtung oder Verjüngung
Language: German (Deutsch)
Wälze, du Wettersturm,
Wälze, des zögernden,
Schleichenden Stromes Gang
Rascher dahin!

Über dem Waldgebirg
Ballt sich und stockt die Nacht,
Doch in der Wolke noch
Zaudert der Stral!

Blume, wo ist dein Schmelz?
Vöglein, wo ist dein Sang?
Quell, wo dein frischer Hauch?
Wald, wo dein Grün?

Diese Entarteten,
Reiße der Sturm sie hin,
Oder verjünge sie
Donner und Blitz!

Confirmed with Poëtische Werke von Robert Hamerling. I. Sinnen und Minnen. Kleinere Dichtungen. Ahasver in Rom, Tiel, H. S. A. Campagne, 1876, page 46.

Note: in many older editions, the spelling of the capitalized word "über" becomes "Ueber", but this is often due to the printing process and not to rules of orthography, since the lower-case version is not "ueber", so we use "Über".
