„Erloschen ist schon der Lampe Schein; schlaf wohl, schlaf wohl, mein Mägdelein, schlaf wohl, schlaf wohl, schlaf wohl! Schlaf wohl, träum' süß bis der Morgen graut, der Morgen, er grüßt dich als fröhliche Braut! Schlaf wohl, träum' süß, schlaf wohl!“ „Ach Mutter, ach Mutter,“ das Mägdelein spricht, „es schließen die Augen zum Schlummer sich nicht, mich flieht, mich flieht der Schlaf! Und hast du vergessen, sie trugen zu Grab Treu Engelbert heut', den verlassen ich hab'! Mich flieht, mich flieht der Schlaf!“ „Und ist er gestorben, mein Töchterlein, brauchst nicht mehr zu horchen den Klagen sein. Schlaf wohl, träum' süß, schlaf wohl!“ „Ach Mutter, ach Mutter, und hörest du nicht, wie's schaurig im Erker sich reget und spricht? Mich flieht, mich flieht der Schlaf!“ Treu Engelbert also zum Mägdelein sprach: „Schön Liebchen, mein Mägdelein, bleibe du wach! Bleib' wach, bleib' wach, bleib' wach! Ich komme, noch eh' der Morgen graut und führe dich heim, dich meine Braut! Bleib' wach, bleib' wach, bleib' wach!“ „Schlaf wohl, schlaf wohl, mein Töchterlein, es wird der nahende Traum nur sein. Schlaf wohl, träum' süß, schlaf wohl!“ „Ach Mutter, und siehst du die blasse Gestalt, die näher und näher zum Bett her wallt? Mich flieht, mich flieht der Schlaf!“ „Schlaf wohl, mein Kind, 's ist Mondenschein, der luget so blass zum Fenster herein; schlaf wohl, träum' süß, schlaf wohl!“ Treu Engelbert wieder zum Mägdelein spricht: „Schön Liebchen, erkennst deinen Buhlen du nicht? Bleib' wach, bleib' wach, bleib' wach! Im Grabe, da ist es gar einsam und kühl, d'rum ich dich, schön Liebchenm mir holen will. Bleib' wach, bleib' wach, bleib' wach!“ „Ach Mutter, und hörst du, Treu Engelbert ruft, soll folgen dem Buhlen zur einsamen Gruft! Mich flieht, mich flieht der Schlaf!“ „Schlaf wohl, schlaf wohl, mein liebes Kind, es pfeift nur so schaurig der nächtliche Wind, schlaf wohl, träum' süß, schlaf, wohl!“ „Die Stunde schlägt, zu Grab ich muss; Schönliebchen, nimm den Bräutigamskuss, komm mit, komm mit, komm mit!“ „Ach Mutter, Treu Engelbert bei mir ist, Treu Engelbert hat mich totgeküsst! Leb wohl, ach Mutter, leb wohl!“
