by Johann Kaspar Lavater (1741 - 1801)
Translation

Stille der Andacht
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the German (Deutsch)
Nur die Einsamkeit umschattet,
Sanft mit Kühlung meinen Geist,
Wenn er durstend und ermattet
Sich dem Weltgerausch entreißt.
Du nur Stille kannst mir geben,
Was mir kein Vertrauter giebt,
Heil, Gefühl und neues Leben,
Ach, Gefühl! daß Gott mich liebt.

O! die stillen Andachtsstunden,
Köstlich! heilig sind sie mir;
Gott! da hab' ich dich gefunden
Vater still geweint vor dir!
Und aus deiner Gottes Fülle
Trost geschöpft und neue Kraft!
Ach du unschätzbare Stille
Die mir solche Freuden schafft.
