denn in der Lieb' ist Poesie,
und Prosa ist das steife SIE.
Mein Herz kann deshalb nie vertragen,
wenn, die darin wohnt, SIE will sagen.
D'rum mir es zu Gefallen tu'
und nenn' mich künftig traulich DU!

Das Wörtchen DU, so ganz erfunden
für Liebende in sel'gen Stunden;
o nenne mich mit ihm allein
und lass das SIE vergessen sein!
Das liebe DU aus deinem Munde,
wie heilt es mir die tiefste Wunde!
D'rum, willst du Lieb' versichern mir,
so sprich: Mein Freund, dies Herz schlägt DIR!

Auf Bällen und auf Assembleen,
wo Stutzer und Kokett' sich sehen,
da nennet man sich höflich SIE,
denn dort herrscht keine Poesie.
Doch wenn ich, Liebchen, dich umschlungen
von himmlischem Gefühl durchdrungen.
Dann, Herzenskind, versteht es sich,
dann sagst du: Freund, ich liebe DICH!
