... I aspens topp en susning gick av höst
bland bladen gulnade och bjärta.
Maria sjöng med sorgtyngd röst
för Jesusbarnet vid sitt hjärta:

Sof sött, du som skall spira
för smärtornas skördedag
som plantorna ängen sira
för slåtterns lieslag.

Du växer för plågans aga
och lidandets bäska tukt
liksom för tröskarns slaga
det dignande axets frukt.

För smädelsens törnehufva
du mognar bland hån och hot,
som vinstockens rodnande drufva
för vinotramparens fot.

Sof sött, ty snart är det dager.
Ren stjärnorna flämta matt;
och åter vår vandring drager
mot målet, som Herren satt.
