The sun has come out late today
and lights the golden fields,
making them look nearer now.
The hay is waiting to be gathered,
rolled up in neat carpets,
soaking the last warmth of pale sunlight.

I would like to go to the hills,
watch the shadows from hedges
close in until there is nothing left
but one small wedge of light
that you can hold in your hand
and throw up into the darkening sky
to burst into a million tiny stars.
