Wehmut
Language: German (Deutsch)
Wenn die Abendlüfte ziehen
Durch den dichtbelaubten Hain,
Und die Sonnen Strahlen fliehen
Hinter Berg und Felsgestein,
Dann fühl' ich mich so verlassen,
Und das Herz ist mir so weh.
Denn die Lüfte alle trauern,
Um die Freund' ins Grabesmauern
Die ich nimmer wiederseh'!

Wenn durch Nacht und Wolkenmasse
Stern erglänzen silberlicht,
Und der Mond, der leichenblasse,
Durch des dunkel Bahn sich bricht,
Dann möcht' ich vor Schmerz vergeh'n,
Daß ich so allein hier steh'n.
Denn die Wolken alle trauern,
Um die Freund' in Todesmaueren
Die ich nimmer wiederseh'!

Note: the original manuscript gave the author only with the initials M. E. P.; according to David Francis Urrows in Collected Vocal Music by Otto Dresel, the author is probably the singer and/or pianist Mary E. Potts.
