Da wallet vor Freude das Herz in der Brust!
Es perlet im Becher der Wein hier so klar,
Das Volk ist so bieder, so treu und so wahr:
   Es ziehet die Sehnsucht ins Herz mir hinein,
   Zu leben, zu sterben am brausenden Rhein.

Die Burgen, die Dome die sind mir so recht,
Sie sprechen vom alten, vom treuen Geschlecht!
Die Städte und Dörfer am lieblichen Strand,
Sie sind als die schönsten im Lande bekannt:
   Es ziehet die Sehnsucht ins Herz mir hinein,
   Zu leben, zu sterben am brausenden Rhein.

Es stehen die Berge in heiliger Pracht,
Als wollten sie selber hier halten die Wacht!
Und nahen uns Feinde mit frevelndem Mut,
So sollen sie zahlen mit Leben und Blut:
   Es ziehet die Sehnsucht ins Herz mir hinein,
   Zu leben, zu sterben am brausenden Rhein.
