Dir fern und ferner, deiner nicht gedenkend,
Verhehlend was einst Glück war, Stolz and Ehre,
Ging ich durch Täler, über Berg and Meere,
In Schutt und Schlamm die müden Füße senkend.

Doch du gingst mir zur Seite unsichtbar,
Von deinem dunklen Blick war ich umfangen,
Dein Atem hauchte mild um meine Wangen,
Daß ich verlassen doch dein eigen war.

So gleitet still der Tod, dem wir gehören,
Urn unsre Schritte, die sich von ihm wenden,
Und wenn verhüllt von blendend bunten Flören

Das Auge noch im Kram des Lebens wählt,
Ruht unsre Seele in des Gottes Händen,
Des treusten, dem von Anfang sie vermählt.
