Und tilgt vom Henker selbst den Blutgeruch,
In Ehre wandelnd seines Amtes Fluch,
Daß köstlich wird, was man zumeist getadelt,

So, wenn du stürbest, würde Tod mir teuer,
Vor allen Göttern nun erflehter Gast,
Des Name wie des Teufels sonst verhaßt,
Mir Feind und Fratze war und Ungeheuer.

Das Leben, dem noch immer Früchte reifen,
Das noch zu Festen hoch die Fackel hält,
Ich hieß es schal, zum Possenspiel entartet,

Das schöne Leben! froh es abzustreifen,
Dem Purpur gleich, der unbeachtet fällt,
Wenn auf dem Hochzeitsbett die Liebe wartet.
