by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben (1798 - 1874)

Das verwüstete Dorf
Language: German (Deutsch)
Aus jenen grünen Büschen
Sah unser Dorf heraus,
Da lag in Fried' und Segen
So manch Gehöft und Haus.

Des wilden Feindes Beute
Ward unser Hab und Gut;
Und was er uns gelassen,
Verzehrte Feuersglut.

Jetzt irren wir wie Bettler
Und heimatlos umher,
Als ob auf dieser Erde
Kein Glück noch Friede wär'.

Der du den Kranken pflegest
Und Brot dem Armen gibst,
Der du den Müden bettest
Und den Verstoßnen liebst --

0 laß uns bald vollenden
Den kummervollen Lauf!
Nimm bald in deine Heimat
Die Heimatlosen auf!
