by Ludwig Heinrich Christoph Hölty (1748 - 1776)

Maylied
Language: German (Deutsch)
Grün wird Wies' und Au,
Und der Himmel blau;
Schwalben kehren wieder,
Und die Erstlingslieder
Kleiner Vögelein
Zwitschern durch den Hain!

Seit der Winter wich,
Freuet Liebe sich;
Lebt und webt im Grünen,
Seit der May erschienen;
Malt die Blumen bunt,
Roth des Mädchens Mund.

Weht, wie Mädchenhauch,
Aus dem Blüthenstrauch,
Durch des Jünglings Seele;
Gießt, o Philomele,
Deine Zaubereyn
Durch den Abendhain!

Jeder Wipfel girrt!
Seht! der Tauber schwirrt
Um sein liebes Täubchen!
Wählt euch auch ein Weibchen,
Wie der Tauber thut,
Und seid wohlgemuth!

Confirmed with Ludwig Christoph Heinrich Hölty's Sämtliche Werke kritisch und chronologisch herausgegeben von Wilhelm Michael, Erster Band, Weimar, Gesellschaft der Bibliophilen, 1914, page 122.

This is Hölty's poem in its latest version, posthumously printed in the 1914 edition (edited by Michael). Hölty's poem exists in 6 manuscript copies which differ significantly (see below).
