In stürmischer, grausester Wetternacht,
da trafen wir plötzlich zusammen,
ein Bettelkind ich, ein Bettelkind du,
und unsere Tränen, sie rannen.

Du zogest mich still in dein Kämmerlein,
wir schwelgten in süßen Wonnen,
ein Bettelkind ich, ein Bettelkind du,
bis mählich die Nacht war verronnen.

D'rauf haben wir scheidend die Hand uns gereicht,
wir konnten nichts weiter uns geben;
ein Bettelkind ich, ein Bettelkind du,
und weiter ins feindliche Leben!
