by Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis (1839 - 1908)

Lágrimas de cera
Language: Portuguese (Português)
Passou; viu a porta aberta.
Entrou; queria rezar.
A vela ardia no altar.
A igreja estava deserta.

Ajoelhou-se defronte
Para fazer a oração;
Curvou a pálida fronte
E pôs os olhos no chão.

Vinha trêmula e sentida.
Cometera um erro. A Cruz
É a âncora da vida,
A esperança, a força, a luz.

Que rezou? Não sei. Benzeu-se
Rapidamente. Ajustou
O véu de rendas. Ergueu-se
E à pia se encaminhou.

Da vela benta que ardera,
Como tranqüilo fanal,
Umas lágrimas de cera
Caíam no castiçal.

Ela porém não vertia
Uma lágrima sequer.
Tinha a fé, a chama a arder,
Chorar é que não podia.
