No doloroso aspecto figurando
A lacrimosa estátua d'amargura.

Dos céus a curva era tranqüila e pura;
Das gementes alciones o bando via-se ao longe,
Em círculos, voando
Dos mares sobre a cérula planura

Nas ondas se atufara o sol radioso,
E a lua sucedera, astro mavioso,
De alvor banhando os alcantis das fragas...
E aquela pobre mãe não dando conta
Que o sol morrera e que o luar desponta,
A vista embebe na amplidão das vagas...
