Der Lebensfrohe

Sie sagen, weil ich heiter bin, 
  Mir fehl' des Lebens Weihe,
Da doch bei festem ernstem Sinn 
  Das Edle nur gedeihe.

Glaubt ihr, weil mich der Quell so sehr, 
  Der munt're oft beglücket,
Daß  mich das stille stumme Meer
  Nicht mächtig drum entzücket?

Denkt ihr, weil ich durch Blumen bald 
  Froh wand're meine Straße,
Daß mich der ernste düstre Wald
  Mit Andacht nicht erfasse?

Weil mich oft munt'rer Mädchen Scherz,
  Und kindlich Spiel ergötzet,
Meint ihr, hätt' noch des Lebens Schmerz
  Mir nie den Blick genetzet?

Glaubt mir, das Aug', das Tränen lacht,
  Es kann auch Tränen weinen,
Wie Sonnenglanz und Wolkennacht
  Aus einem Himmel scheinen.
