by Robert Howard, Sir (1626 - 1698)

Love, thou can'st hear
Language: English
Love, thou can'st hear, tho' thou art blind;
Leave my heart free, oh! pity me,
Since Cloris is unkind.
She is unconstant as she's bright;
Her smiles on ev'ry shepherd fall,
And as the sun uses his light,
She vainly loves to shine on all.

Love, thou can'st hear, tho' thou art blind;
Leave my heart free, oh! pity me,
Since Cloris is unkind.
The powerful charms shall now be tried,
This fury from my breast to chase,
I'll summons scorn, revenge and pride
At least her image to deface.

I thought her fair like new fall'n snow,
Where whiteness innocence enclos'd.
Like that she sullied seems to show,
When to love's melting heat expos'd.
