by Paul Verlaine (1844 - 1896)

Saints innocents
Language: French (Français)
Cruel Hérode, noir Péché,
De tes sept glaives tu poursuis
Les innocents, lesquels je suis
Dans mes cinq sens, -- et, qu'empêché
Me voici pour, las ! me défendre !

L'argile dont Dieu les forma,
Leur faiblesse à ces tristes sens
Par quoi je suis les innocents
Que l'on immole dans Rama,
Trahissent leur âge trop tendre.

Nulle fuite. Mais mon Sauveur,
Assumant mon sort et ma mort,
Vit en Égypte dont il sort
À temps pour l'insigne faveur
Qu'il me fait de donner sa vie
Et sa pensée à mon bonheur
Éternel, et, par l'action
Sûre de l'absolution
De son prêtre à lui, le Seigneur,
Ressuscite ma chair ravie.
