  Ach! Mutter, laßt es euch gestehn:
Ich möchte schier vor Qual vergehn,
Mich plaget Liebesschmerz.
Es raubt mir euer Töchterlein
Durch ihrer Augen hellen Schein
Gar freventlich mein Herz.

  Seitdem ihr Blick den meinen traf,
Flieht mich die Freude, flieht der Schlaf,
Ist Alles mir zur Last;
Und immer liegt sie mir im Sinn,
Und immer zieht's nach ihr mich hin,
Hab' weder Ruh noch Rast.

  Doch sie -- sie hat ein Herz von Stein;
Will ich sie küssen, sagt sie: nein!
Das ist verbotnes Gut.
Berühr' ich leise nur die Hand,
Gleich ist das Köpfchen weggewandt;
Da fällt mir aller Muth.

  Ich weiß es, Liebchen traut mir nicht,
Weil sie, schau ich ihr in's Gesicht,
Gleich mit dem Finger droht;
Euch, Mutter, glaubt sie mehr als mir,
O, schildert meine Leiden ihr,
Und klagt ihr meine Noth.

  Und rühret ihr die Marmorbrust,
So gönnet mir die süße Lust
Und gebt sie mir zur Frau!
Dann soll mein Kummer bald entfliehn,
Dann wird die Erde wieder grün,
Der Himmel wieder blau.

Outpouring of the heart

Language: English after the German (Deutsch)

  Ah! Mother, let me confess it to you:
I am nearly perishing with agony,
I am plagued by lovesickness.
With the bright radiance of her eyes
Your dear daughter has wickedly
Stolen my heart.

  Since her gaze encountered mine,
Joy has flown, sleep has flown,
Everything is a burden to me;
And she is always in my mind,
And I am continually drawn to her,
I have neither peace nor rest.

  But she -- she has a heart of stone;
If I want to kiss her, she says: no!
Those are forbidden goods.
When I only gently touch her hand,
Her dear head is immediately turned away;
Thereupon I lose all courage.

  I know it, the darling does not trust me,
Because, when I look into her face,
She immediately admonishes me with her finger;
You, Mother, she would believe more than me,
Oh, describe my suffering to her,
And tell her of my distress.

  And if you manage to move her marble bosom,
Then grant me the sweet joy
And give her to me as my wife!
Then my sorrow shall soon vanish,
Then the earth shall become green again,
And the sky blue.
