Nun weiß ich, was mir ist -- die Uhr blieb stehn. Das alte Stimmchen, das mich oft gestört, Mit seinem Tiktak mich begleitet hat In manche ruhelose Nacht hinein -- Nun schlief es ein. Welch schauerliche Stille! Auf meinem Lager lieg ich wachend noch Und schau hinüber mit den heißen Augen Und bitte "Rühr dich doch!" Belebe mir die Nacht mit deinem Sang, Mein Herz ist einsam und die Nacht ist lang. Wie eiltest du mit hastig kurzem Schlag, Da ich der Liebe noch am Herzen lag, Und nun ich gern die Zeit beflügeln will, Die thränenvolle Zeit, nun stehst du still. Die Schatten fließen dräuend um mich her, Und durch die Fluth dringt keine Stimme mehr, Die mir, damit ich endlich doch entschliefe, Ihr "ich bin bei dir" in die Ohren riefe. Erwache doch, sing mich in Schlummer, Uhr! Wie quält es mich, dein altes Lied zu hören; Und bist ein fühllos todtes Ding doch nur! Und eine Stimme, die ich einst geliebt, Ein Theil von mir, unsterblich, wie man sagt, Ist treulos wie dein Ticken mir verklungen; Die Schatten haben sie, die Nacht, verschlungen, Die große Nacht, der nie ein Morgen tagt.

Encore éveillée je suis sur mon lit Et regarde vers le haut, les yeux brûlants Et implore « Bouge-toi donc ! » Qu'avec ton chant la nuit me revivifie, Mon cœur est seul et la nuit est longue. Comme tu courais avec ton battement bref et rapide Lorsque l'amour habitait encore mon cœur, Et maintenant que j'aimerais donner des ailes au temps, Au temps plein de larmes, maintenant tu restes muette. Des ombres menaçantes affluent autour de moi Et dans cette marée ne pénètre plus aucune voix Avec laquelle pourtant je finissais par m'endormir Quand elle me criait dans l'oreille son «Je suis près de toi ». Réveille-toi donc, endors-moi en chantant, horloge ! Comme je suis tourmentée d'entendre ta vielle chanson ; Et même si tu n' es qu'une chose morte et insensible !
