Conec una noia que mirava profundament als ulls d’un xicot de cabells arrissats, i tant si estava desperta o adormida, ella el volia tenir als seus braços. Ella digué: Tu m’has llevat la pau, de pena haig d’acotar el meu cap, car tot el meu sentir i pensar ets tu i tot el meu somiar i anhelar. Conec també un xicot que es va fer home, ell cantava i tocava el violí, i abans que el joiós estiu s’acabés, la noia esdevingué seva. Ella digué: I quan ell m’agafa amb els braços i m’estreny una i altra vegada, per a mi, és com si un àngel batent ses ales davallés del cel. I prop del rierol, on pengen les branques del salze, es van ajeure tots dos damunt la molsa, i fou llavors quan ell ardentment l’abraçà, una rosa florida i fervent. Tremolant el seu cos, ella s’arrimà amb ell en l’inebriant goig de l’amor, ella rigué, ella plorà, la dona feliç, i, per ell, hagués volgut donar la seva vida. – Traït l’amor, la fidelitat trencada, -- ell la deixà i anà a córrer món i xiulant i tocant el violí foragita el seu penediment i besa i amanyaga altres dones.
