In der Kindheit frühen Tagen Hört ich oft von Engeln sagen, Die des Himmels hehre Wonne Tauschen mit der Erdensonne, Daß, wo bang ein Herz in Sorgen Schmachtet vor der Welt verborgen, Daß, wo still es will verbluten, Und vergehn in Tränenfluten, Daß, wo brünstig sein Gebet Einzig um Erlösung fleht, Da der Engel niederschwebt, Und es sanft gen Himmel hebt. Ja, es stieg auch mir ein Engel nieder, Und auf leuchtendem Gefieder Führt er, ferne jedem Schmerz, Meinen Geist nun himmelwärts!

En aquellos tempranos días de mi infancia oía a menudo hablar de ángeles que cambiaban el sol de la tierra por la sublime dicha celestial; que, cuando un corazón angustiado por las penas languidecía, oculto al mundo, queriendo desangrarse y deshacerse en un torrente de lágrimas, en oración delirante, suplicando solo por su salvación, un ángel descendía y lo elevaba dulcemente hacia el cielo. También por mí descendió un ángel y, en alas de su brillante plumaje, eleva ahora mi espíritu, ajeno a todo dolor, hacia el cielo.

Halte an dich, zeugende Kraft, Urgedanke, der ewig schafft! Hemmet den Atem, stillet den Drang, Schweiget nur eine Sekunde lang! Schwellende Pulse, fesselt den Schlag; Ende, des Wollens ew'ger Tag! Daß in selig süßem Vergessen Ich mög alle Wonnen ermessen! Wenn Aug' in Auge wonnig trinken, Seele ganz in Seele versinken; Wesen in Wesen sich wiederfindet, Und alles Hoffens Ende sich kündet, Die Lippe verstummt in staunendem Schweigen, Keinen Wunsch mehr will das Innre zeugen: Erkennt der Mensch des Ew'gen Spur, Und löst dein Rätsel, heil'ge Natur!

Silbante, rugiente rueda del tiempo, tú que cortas la eternidad, brillantes esferas en el vasto espacio, vosotras que rodeáis el orbe, primigenia e infinita creación, ¡detente, basta de crear, déjame estar! ¡Contente, fuerza que engendra, pensamiento primigenio que eternamente crea! ¡Impedid la respiración, saciad el deseo, callad solo un segundo! ¡Crecientes latidos, conteneos, que cese el eterno día de la voluntad! ¡Que en feliz y dulce olvido pueda yo toda dicha apreciar! Cuando los ojos beben felizmente de otros ojos, un alma se sumerge en otra, cuando un ser se reencuentra en otro y se anuncia el fin de toda esperanza, cuando los labios enmudecen asombrados y ya no se desea nada más, entonces reconoce el hombre la huella del Eterno y resuelve tu misterio, ¡sagrada naturaleza!

Hochgewölbte Blätterkronen, Baldachine von Smaragd, Kinder ihr aus fernen Zonen, Saget mir, warum ihr klagt? Schweigend neiget ihr die Zweige, Malet Zeichen in die Luft, Und der Leiden stummer Zeuge Steiget aufwärts, süßer Duft. Weit in sehnendem Verlangen Breitet ihr die Arme aus, Und umschlinget wahnbefangen Öder Leere nicht'gen Graus. Wohl, ich weiß es, arme Pflanze; Ein Geschicke teilen wir, Ob umstrahlt von Licht und Glanze, Unsre Heimat ist nicht hier! Altas, abovedadas frondas, baldaquinos de esmeralda, niños de lejanas tierras, decidme, ¿por qué os lamentáis? Callando inclináis vuestras ramas, dibujando señales en el aire; dulces aromas ascienden, como mudo testigo de vuestro sufrimiento. Extendéis vuestros brazos en anhelante deseo y delirando rodeáis el fútil espanto del vacío yermo. Lo sé bien, desdichada planta: compartimos un destino; aunque rodeados de luz y esplendor, nuestra patria no está aquí. Como el sol se separa alegremente del vacío fulgor diurno, así se cubre aquel, que verdaderamente sufre, con la callada oscuridad. Todo se vuelve silencioso, un entramado susurrante ocupa temeroso el oscuro espacio; veo temblar pesadas gotas al borde de las verdes hojas.

Sol, que cada atardecer lloras hasta enrojecer tus bonitos ojos cuando, bañándote en el resplandeciente mar, te alcanza la temprana muerte; pero resurges en tu antiguo esplendor, como gloria de este lúgubre mundo, despertando nuevamente cada mañana, cual orgulloso y triunfador héroe. ¡Ay! ¿Cómo puedo entonces lamentarme, cómo, corazón mío, estás tan apesadumbrado, si el sol mismo debe desistir, debe hundirse? Si la muerte solo alumbra vida, si alumbran los pesares tan solo dichas, ¡oh, cuán agradecido estoy entonces pues la naturaleza me ha dado tales pesares!

Dime, ¿qué maravillosos sueños tienen a mis sentidos atrapados, que no se han disipado como espuma vacía, en la desolada nada? Aquellos sueños que, a cada hora, cada día, florecen más bellos, que con su saber celestial atraviesan felices el espíritu. Sueños que se hunden en el alma como sublimes rayos para dibujar allí una imagen eterna: ¡completamente olvidados, pero siempre presentes! Sueños que, como el sol primaveral, besan las flores que surgen entre la nieve, para que así, en una dicha nunca imaginada, las salude un nuevo día, para que crezcan y florezcan, y soñando ofrezcan su aroma, dulcemente se extingan sobre tu pecho y después se hundan en la tumba.
