Ich weiß ein Herz das traurig schlägt, Das nimmer sich in Ruhe legt, Und zieht die Schwalbe unters Dach, Sie singt ihm nicht die Freude wach. Es wogt das Korn, es blüht der Pfad, Ihm reift die Sonne keine Saat. Und wenn das Laub im Herbstwind fällt1, Sein Leid besteht, sein Kümmer hält. Dann kommt die öde Wintersruh. Doch deckt der Schnee den Schmerz nicht zu! Ich weiß ein Herz das traurig schlägt, Das nimmer sich in Ruhe legt.
