Trunken von früher Glut Taumelt ein gelber Falter. Sitzend am Fenster ruht Schläfrig gebückt ein Alter. Singend durchs Frühlingslaub Ist er einst ausgezogen. So vieler Straßen Staub hat sein Haar überflogen. Zwar der blühende Baum Und die Falter, die gelben Scheinen gealtert kaum, Scheinen heut noch dieselben. Doch es sind Farbe und Duft Dünner geworden und leerer, Kühler das Licht und die Luft Strenger zu atmen und schwerer. Frühling summt bienenleis Seine Gesänge, die holden. Himmel schwingt blau und weiß, Falter entflattern golden.

Sonne krankt, Gebirge kauert, Schwarze Wetterwolkenwand Mit geduckten Kräften lauert, Niedrig flatten scheue Vögel, Graue Schatten übers Land. Donner, lange schon zu hören, Poltert lauter los und klingt Herrlich auf zu Paukenchören, Draus trompetenhell und golden Blitz um Blitz den Schwall durchdringt. Regen stürzt in dichten Güssen Gläsern, kalt und silberfahl, Rennt in Bächen, rauscht in Flüssen Wild wie lang verhaltenes Schluchzen Nieder ins erschreckte Tal.

Regenrauschen und Chinesenlied, Wasserfallmusik und Meeresklang, Welche Macht ist's, die mich wieder zieht Euren Zaubern nach die Welt entlang? Eure Seele ist der ewige Ton, Der nicht Zeit und der nicht Wechsel kennt, Dessen Heimat wir vorzeit entflohn, Dessen Nachklang uns im Herzen brennt.

Atmen tut wohl, Atmen ist Seligkeit, Ist Gebet und Gesang, Atme, Seele, öffne der Sonne dich weit Deine flüchtige Stunde lang!
