 Dem Sang von ferne lauschend, schwingt
 Die Peri höher sich empor;
 Der reinsten Liebe Seufzer bringt
 Sie als Geschenk vor Edens Tor.
 Hoch kopft ihr Herz, die Hoffnung spricht's:
 Bald soll sie Edens Palmen nahn,
 Denn lächelnd nimmt der Geist des Lichts
 Am Tore diese Gabe an.
 Und horch, von Himmelsbäumen ruft
 Kristallner Glöckchen Klang, sie lauscht
 Dem Läuten in ambrosischer Luft,
 Die her von Allahs Throne rauscht;
 Sie sieht die Sternenschalen blinken,
 Rings um den See des Lichts gereiht,
 Wo die verklärten Seelen trinken
 Den ersten Trank der Herrlichkeit.
 Doch eitel war der Peri Hoffen,
 Noch stand das ew'ge Tor nicht offen;
 Es spricht der Engel, Schmerz im Blick:

Der Engel
 Noch nicht!
 Treu war die Maid, und die Geschichte,
 Geschrieben überm Haupt des Herrn,
 Liest lange noch der Seraph gern;
 Doch, Peri, noch währt der Verschluß
 Von Edens Tor:
 Viel heil'ger muß die Gabe sein,
 Die dich zum Tor des Lichts läßt ein!

 Oyendo a lo lejos el canto, 
 sube la Peri hacia lo alto;
 del amor puro lleva los suspiros
 como ofrenda a la puerta del Edén. 
 Palpita fuerte su corazón, y la esperanza dice:
 Próximas están a las palmas del Edén,
 pues sonriente el espíritu de la luz acogerá
 el regalo en esas puertas. 
 Oíd, de los árboles del Cielo viene
 un cristalino toque de campanillas, ella escucha
 el sonido en el aire balsámico
 que fluye del trono de Alá; 
 ve centellear las estrellas
 que circundan de luz el lago,
 en donde las almas transfiguradas beben
 el primer sorbo de la gloria.
 Pero vana fue la esperanza de la Peri,
 aún no se abren las eternas puertas;
 y el ángel dice con mirada dolorida: 

El ángel
 ¡Aún no!
 Fiel fue la doncella, y su historia, 
 escrita en la cabeza del Señor,
 será leída muchas veces por el serafín;
 sin embargo, Peri, está aún cerrada
 la puerta del Edén. 
 Mucho más sagrado deberá ser el don
 que te abra la puerta de la luz.
