Solemnly the rain drones out its song in the gloomy trees, Over the forested hills an awe-inspiring storm is brewing. Friends, autumn is near, already it lurks, peering along the forest rim; The field too stares emptily at us, only visited by birds. But upon the southern slopes the grape is ripening blue upon the vine, A glow and a secret comfort is hidden in its blessed womb. Soon everything that today still stands full of sap and in rustling greenery Shall pass away, pale and freezing, dying in fog and snow; Only the warming wine and at table the smiling apple Shall still glow in the radiance of sunny days and summer. Thus also our spirits age and in the faltering winter taste Gratefully the warming glow, gladly the wine of memory, And the tattered feasts and joys of bygone days Like ghosts in a silent dance waft blissful shadows through our hearts.
