Es ist ein still Erwarten in den Bäumen,
Die Nachtigallen in den Büschen schlagen
In irren Klagen, können's doch nicht sagen,
Die Schmerzen all' und Wonne, halb in Träumen.

Die Lerche auch will nicht die Zeit versäumen,
Da solches Schallen bringt die Luft getragen,
Schwingt sich vom Tal, eh's noch beginnt zu tagen,
Im ersten Strahl die Flügel sich zu säumen.

Ich aber stand schon lange in dem Garten
Und bin in's stille Feld hinausgegangen,
Wo leis die Ähren an zu wogen fingen.

O fromme Vöglein, ihr und ich, wir warten
Auf's frohe Licht, da ist uns vor Verlangen
Bei stiller Nacht erwacht so sehnend Singen.

Il y a une attente silencieuse dans les arbres,
Dans les buissons les rossignols chantent
Une plainte confuse, ils ne peuvent pas dire
Leurs peines et leurs plaisirs, encore à demi en rêve.

L'alouette aussi ne veut laisser passer l'heure,
Dès que de tels échos sont portés par la brise,
Elle s'élance de la vallée, avant même le lever du jour
Pour étirer ses ailes aux premiers rayons.

Quant à moi, je suis déjà depuis longtemps dans le jardin
Et je suis sorti dans les champs silencieux
Où les épis commençaient à doucement se balancer.

Ô doux petits oiseaux, vous et moi attendons
Cette joyeuse lumière, alors s'éveille en nous un désir,
Chant si langoureux dans la nuit silencieuse.
