You can help us modernize! The present website has been online for a very long time and we want to bring it up to date. As of May 6, we are $2,380 away from our goal of $15,000 to fund the project. The fully redesigned site will be better for mobile, easier to read and navigate, and ready for the next decade. Please give today to join dozens of other supporters in making this important overhaul possible!

So tief erschütternd, unendlich traurig.
Ich möchte gerne mir sagen:
Daß ich ja fest geschlafen hab',
Daß ich ja nicht geträumt hab',
Doch rinnen mir noch die Tränen herab,
Ich höre mein Herz noch schlagen.

Ich bin erwacht in banger Ermattung,
Ich finde mein Tuch durchnäßt am Kissen,
Wie man's heimbringt von einer Bestattung;
Hab ich's im Traume hervorgerissen
Und mir getrocknet das Gesicht?
Ich weiß es nicht.
Doch waren sie da, die schlimmen Gäste,
Sie waren da zum nächtlichen Feste.
Ich schlief, mein Haus war preisgegeben,
Sie führten darin ein wüstes Leben.
Nun sind sie fort, die wilden Naturen;

J'aurais bien aimé pouvoir me dire
Que j'avais profondément dormi,
Que je n'avais certes pas rêvé,
Mais mes larmes coulaient encore,
J'entendais encore mon cœur battre.

Je me réveille accablé d'anxiété,
Comme ramené chez moi d'une inhumation ;
Ils sont maintenant partis, ces créatures sauvages ;
En larmes je trouve les vestiges
De tout ce qu'ils m'ont mis à l'envers
Et sur la table le vin renversé.
