Jeder meint, der Gegenstand, den er sich erwählet,
Sei voll von Vollkommenheit, so, dass ihm nichts fehlet,
Und sein Vorzug sei es nur, der das Herze rühret,
Da doch blinde Leidenschaft, die Vernunft verfüret.

Wann die Lieb' im Herzen brennt, wird das Aug' verblendet,
Man sieht nichts als Reizendes, wo man sich hinwendet;
Nie steht es in unsrer Macht, alsdann frei zu sehen,
Und die ganze Urteilskraft muss zurücke gehen.

Ieder meent, dat het object

Ieder meent, dat het object, door hem uitverkoren,
Prachtig is en haast perfect, alles naar behoren.
En zijn schoonheid is het slechts die het hart verovert,
Daar ‘t toch blinde hartstocht is die ’t verstand betovert.
 
Als de liefde brandt in ’t hart, valt het zien erg tegen,
Men ziet niets dan liefelijks, ja wel allerwegen;
Het ligt niet in onze macht, dan nog vrij te kijken
En al onze oordeelskracht moet daarvoor dan wijken.
