Farben sind genug beisammen

Language: German (Deutsch)

Farben sind genug beisammen,
Pinsel liegen auch bereit,
Leinewand ist ausgespannt
Und erwartet nur die Hand,
Die geschickt [mit]1 bunten Flammen
Leben auf die Fläche streut.

Und noch immer [mußt]2 Du sinnen,
Ziehest Deine Hand zurück?
Laß' doch das, was innerlich
[Still und rein gebildet]3 sich,
Auch für uns Gestalt gewinnen.
Laß' sich's zeigen unserm Blick.

Oder ist noch unvollendet
Jenes Bild, das in Dir kreist,
So steh' auf und schaue dann
Ferner nicht das [Rüstzeug]4 an,
Bis dem Bild wird Kraft gespendet,
Daß es seine Hülle reißt. --

Wer mit Farben, oder Tönen
[Linnen]5, oder Luft erfüllt,
Halt' an dieser Lehre fest,
Daß sich Kunst nicht zwingen läßt,
Daß sie nicht auf [blasses]6 Fröhnen,
Wie [dem Feld die Saat, entschwillt]7.

Sufficient paints have been assembled

Language: English after the German (Deutsch)

Sufficient paints have been assembled,
Brushes, too, lie at the ready,
Canvas has been stretched
And only awaits the hand
That [with]1 colourful flames
Shall skillfully strew life upon the surface.

And you [must yet]2 sit pondering;
You draw back your hand?
Only let that which inwardly
Has [quietly and purely]3 shaped itself
Acquire form for us as well.
Let it reveal itself to our gaze.

Or if it is still unfinished,
That image that circles [in your thoughts],
Then arise and do not gaze
Any longer upon the tools
Until the image is given the strength
To burst from its veil. --

He who fills canvas or air
With colours or musical sounds,
Should hold fast to this maxim:
That art cannot be coerced,
That it does not swell forth in response to [pale]4 indulgence
As the crop [swells forth] from the field.
