Alter Bäume märchenblaue Schatten
Kühlten meiner frechen Träume Brand.

Dürstend geh ich nun auf heißen Wegen
Und verschlossen liegt mein Jugendland,
Rosen nicken übern Mauerrand
Spöttisch meiner Wanderschaft entgegen.

Und indes mir fern und ferner singt
Meines kühlen Garten Wipfelrauschen,
Muß ich inniger und tiefer lauschen,
Wie es schöner noch als damals klingt.

Des sources argentées jaillissaient des pâturages,
La féerique ombre bleue des vieux arbres
Rafraîchissait le feu de mes rêves impertinents.

Je vais maintenant, assoiffé, sur des chemins brûlants,
Et le pays de ma jeunesse est inaccessible.
Par dessus le mur des roses saluent
Moqueusement ma pérégrination.

Et tandis que chante de plus en plus lointain
Le bruissement des cimes de mon frais jardin,
Je ressens de plus en plus profondément
Combien il est encore plus beau qu'autrefois.
