cum Sancti Benedicti Spiritum suum illi spatharium indutum mittit purpura.
A multis servus sociis Dum comitatus simulat se Regem esse Totila 
Hoc benedictus in tuens statim dicit spathario.
Depone fili quod geris, depone purpuram, depone coronam Sceptrum, 
depone ornamentum enim illud Regium tuum non est depone.
Oh turpis, oh demens astutia que vel per iocum,
per iocum fallere sanctorum oculos non potest.
Verum Dum prestat Totila Sancto Benedicto maximum genuflexus obsequium
Regi Idolatre plurima, Benedictus prenuntiat.
Oh pulcra, oh felix devotio que impetrare gratias a sanctis vocibus non dubitat.

Elle se répandait partout la renommée de sainteté
de notre bienheureux père Benoît.
Elle se répandait partout la renommée et Benoît l'augmentait chaque jour
en prédisant les grâces à venir.
Alors le roi goth Totila pour se moquer du pouvoir prophétique
de saint Benoît  envoya son porte-glaive habillé de pourpre.
Accompagné de nombreux serviteurs, l'envoyé prétend être le roi Totila
Benoît dit aussitôt au porte-glaive 
« Mon fils, dépose ce que tu portes, dépose la pourpre, dépose la couronne,
le sceptre, dépose tes ornements car cette splendeur n'est pas tienne. »
Ô ruse honteuse, ô ruse insensée qui par plaisanterie,
par jeu ne peut tromper les yeux des saints.
Tandis que Totila offre à saint Benoît la plus grande soumission
en s'agenouillant Benoît prédit au roi la plus grande idolâtrie.
Ô magnifique, ô heureuse dévotion qui n'hésite pas à obtenir des grâces par les paroles des saints.
