Wunsch
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Etwas wünschen und verlangen,
  Etwas hoffen muß das Herz,
  Etwas zu verlieren bangen,
  Und um etwas fühlen Schmerz.
Deine Lust und deine Wonne
Mußt du an was immer sehn,
  Soll vergeblich Mond und Sonne
  Nicht an dir vorübergehn.
Gleich von unbegränztem Sehnen
  Wie entfernt von träger Ruh,
  Müsse sich mein Leben dehnen
Wie ein Strom dem Meere zu.

Z. Fibich sets lines 1-4

Confirmed with Friedrich Rückert’s Gedichte, Auswahl des Verfassers, Frankfurt am Main: Druck und Verlag von Johan David Sauerländer, 1841, pages 557-558

Wish
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
The heart must wish and yearn for something,
  Must hope for something,
Must be anxious about losing something,
And must feel pain about something.
Your joy and your bliss
  You must find wherever,
  The moon and the sun
Must not pass by you in vain.
Equally far removed from unbounded yearning
  As from indolent rest,
  My life must expand
Like a river toward to the sea.
