Var det en dröm

Är det ett minne av en ungdoms dröm?
Midsommarnatt det var, ett fagert möte
emellan kväll och morgon; ljusets ström
föll som ett silverregn i nattens sköte.

Blick låg i blick, och barm låg tryckt mot barm,
tills drömmen bröts och avskedstimmen bräckte,
och morgonen med minnets kyssar täckte
en himmel än av kvällens kyssar varm.

Var det en dröm? Nu är midvinterdag;
de länge skilda föras åter samman;
än ligger skimmer över deras drag,
men djupare i deras blick är flamman.

De le, som döende måhända le.
Ett solvarvs skilda öden hava svunnit:
med ögon, hvilka glädjens botten funnit,
de stumma, bleka mot varandra se.

Était‑ce un rêve

Était-ce le souvenir d'un rêve de jeunesse ?
c'était la nuit de la Saint Jean, une séduisante rencontre
entre soir et matin ; un torrent de lumière
tombait comme une pluie d'argent au sein de la nuit.

Les yeux dans les yeux et poitrine serrée contre poitrine
jusqu'à ce que le rêve se brise et que sonne l'heure de l'adieu,
le matin couvrait avec les baisers du souvenir
un ciel encore chaud des baisers du soir.

Était-ce un rêve ? c'est maintenant le solstice d'hiver ;
ceux qui furent longtemps séparés sont à nouveau ensemble ;
il y a encore une lueur sur leurs traits,
et  plus vive est  la flamme dans leurs yeux.

Ils rient, comme les mourants peuvent arriver à rire.
Un destin séparé a disparu du cycle solaire :
au fond de leurs yeux il y a la joie,
ils sont muets, pâles, ils se regardent.
