Sieht uns der Blick gehoben,
So glaubt das Herz die Schwere zu besiegen;
Zu den Himmlischen oben
Will es dringen und fliegen.
Der Mensch, empor geschwungen,
Glaubt schon, er sey durch die Wolken gedrungen.

Bald muß er staunend merken,
Wie ewig fest wir auf uns selbst begründet.
Dann strebt in sichern Werken
Sein ganzes Thun, verbündet,
Vom Grunde nie zu wanken,
Und baut wie Felsen den Bau der Gedanken.

Und dann in neuen Freuden
Sieht er die kühnen Klippen spottend hangen;
Vergessend aller Leiden,
Fühlt er einzig Verlangen,
An dem Abgrund zu scherzen,
Denn hoher Muth schwillt ihm in hohem Herzen.

Quan l’esguard s’enlaira,
el nostre cor creu que pot vèncer la gravetat;
als éssers celestials allà dalt,
voldria arribar volant.
L’home, pujant amunt,
s’imagina que ja ha travessat els núvols.

Aviat però ha d’adonar-se amb astorament
que estem per sempre afermats en nosaltres mateixos.
Llavors, ell malda per aplegar en sòlides obres
totes les seves accions,
determinat a no vacil•lar mai dels seus principis,
i basteix, com si fos de roca, l’edifici dels pensaments.

I aleshores, amb renovada joia,
veu, tot burlant-se’n, els arriscats cingles penjant;
oblidant tots els seus sofriments,
sent l’únic desig
de plaguejar al marge de l’abisme,
car un noble coratge s’acreix en el seu cor exaltat.
