You can help us modernize! The present website has been online for a very long time and we want to bring it up to date. As of May 6, we are $2,380 away from our goal of $15,000 to fund the project. The fully redesigned site will be better for mobile, easier to read and navigate, and ready for the next decade. Please give today to join dozens of other supporters in making this important overhaul possible!

Hippolits Lied

Language: German (Deutsch)

Laßt mich, ob ich auch still verglüh',
Laßt mich nur stille gehn;
Sie seh' ich spät, Sie seh' ich früh
Und ewig vor mir stehn.

Was ladet ihr zur Ruh' mich ein?
Sie nahm die Ruh' mir fort;
Und wo Sie ist, da muß ich seyn,
Hier sey es oder dort.

Zürnt diesem armen Herzen nicht,
Es hat nur einen Fehl:
Treu muß es schlagen bis es bricht,
Und hat deß nimmer Hehl.

Laßt mich, ich denke doch nur Sie;
In Ihr nur denke ich;
Ja! ohne Sie wär' ich einst nie
Bei Engeln ewiglich.

Im Leben denn und auch im Tod',
Im Himmel, so wie hier,
Im Glück und in der Trennung Noth
Gehör' ich einzig Ihr.

Confirmed with Gabriele. Ein Roman von Johanna Schopenhauer. In drei Theilen. Dritter Theil. Leipzig: F. A. Brockhaus. 1821, page 146.

Note: Johanna Schopenhauer wrote in the foreword of her novel (Gabriele. Erster Theil. Leipzig: 1819, Vorwort, page VIII), that the poems in her book ar not by herself, but have been supplied by Friedrich von Gerstenbergk. Nevertheless, the poem is often misattributed to Johanna Schopenhauer.

La cançó de l’Hipòlit

Language: Catalan (Català) after the German (Deutsch)

Deixeu-me que em consumeixi en silenci,
deixeu-me tan sols marxar en pau;
la veig a darrera hora, la veig d’hora al matí
i sempre és davant meu.

Per què m’inciteu al repòs?
Ella em prengué tot el repòs;
i on ella estigui, hi haig de ser jo,
ja sigui aquí o allà.

No us enutgeu amb aquest pobre cor
que només té una mancança:
ha de bategar fidelment fins que es trenqui
i això mai ho ha amagat.

Deixeu-me, malgrat tot penso en ella,
solament penso en ella;
sí, sense ella no puc esperar algun dia
de restar eternament amb els àngels.

En la vida i també en la mort,
en el cel, com aquí a la terra,
en la felicitat i en el dolor de la separació,
jo pertanyo únicament a ella.
