Schneeglöcklein, o Schneeglöcklein! In den Auen läutest du, Läutest in dem stillen Hain, Läute immer, läute zu! Denn du kündest frohe Zeit, Frühling naht, der Bräutigam, Kommt mit Sieg vom Winterstreit, Dem er seine Eiswehr nahm. Darum schwingt der goldne Stift, Daß dein Silberhelm erschallt, Und dein liebliches Gedüft Leis', wie Schmeichelruf entwallt: Daß die Blumen in der Erd Steigen aus dem düstern Nest Und des Bräutigams sich werth Schmücken zu dem [Hochzeitsfest]1. - Schneeglöcklein, o Schneeglöcklein! In den Auen läutest du, Läutest in dem stillen Hain, Läut' die Blumen aus der Ruh! Du Viola, zartes Kind, Hörst zuerst den Wonnelaut, Und sie stehet auf geschwind, Schmücket sorglich sich als Braut. Schwestern nicht - nicht Bräutigam - Zugedrungen! und verschmäht! - Da durchschauert sie die Schaam, Fliehet wie vom Sturm geweht, Fliehet an den fernsten Ort, Wo sie Gras und Schatten deckt, Späht und lauschet immerfort: Ob was rauschet und sich regt. Und gekränket und getäuscht Sitzet sie und schluchzt und weint; Von der tiefsten Angst zerfleischt, Ob kein Nahender [erscheint]6. - Schneeglöcklein, o Schneeglöcklein! In den Auen läutest du, Läutest in dem stillen Hain, Läut die Schwestern ihr herzu! - Rose nahet, Lilie schwankt, Tulp und Hyacinthe schwellt, Windling kommt daher gerankt, Und Narciß hat sich gesellt. [Als]7 der Frühling nun erscheint Und das frohe Fest beginnt, Sieht er alle die vereint, Und vermißt sein liebstes Kind. Alle schickt er suchend fort Um die Eine, die ihm werth. Bucaneve, o campanellina che tintinni nei campi, tintinni nel bosco silente, tintinna sempre, tintinna più alto, tintinna sempre più alto! Perché tu annunci il tempo felice, si avvicina Primavera, lo sposo, viene vincitore dalla lotta con l'Inverno, al quale ha strappato l'arma di ghiaccio. E quindi rotea l'aureo scettro fino a far risuonare il tuo elmo d'argento, e il tuo profumo delicato si sprigiona piano, richiamo ricco di lusinghe: che i fiori della terra sorgano dal tetro nido, e si facciano degno ornamento della festa di nozze dello sposo. Bucaneve, o campanellina che tintinni nei campi, tintinni nel bosco silente, risveglia i fiori dal loro riposo! Tu Viola, delicata fanciulla, per la prima volta ascolti il suono del desiderio: ed ecco che lei si alza frettolosa, si adorna da sposa, con cura. Si avvolge nell'abito verde prende il mantello blu di velluto, prende i gioielli d'oro e i brillanti di rugiada. Poi si affretta con passo veloce ma l'amico del sentimento più intenso, tutto irraggiante gioia d'amore, dov'è? qui non lo vede, là non lo vede. Ahimé, un senso d'angoscia trafigge il suo petto minuto, perché tutt'attorno è ancora silenzio e le brezze spirano fredde. E lei arresta il suo veloce andare, già illuminata dalla luce del sole, ma guarda in su atterrita, scoprendosi del tutto sola. Alle sorelle, allo sposo, non potrà riunirsi! È ripudiata! Ecco rabbrividisce di vergogna, fugge via come involata dal turbine. Fugge nel luogo più lontano, dove l'erba e l'ombra le diano riparo, spia e ascolta tutto il tempo, se mai qualcosa sussurri e si elevi. E ormai affranta e delusa si siede a piangere tra i singhiozzi dilaniata dalla paura profonda, che non compaia accanto più alcuno. Bucaneve, o campanellina che tintinni nei campi, tintinni nel bosco silente, chiama a lei le consorelle! Si avvicina la rosa, oscilla il giglio, sbocciano tulipano e giacinto, il rampicante si accosta avvinghiandosi, e il narciso viene a tener compagnia. Ecco che alfine Primavera appare, ha inizio la lieta festa, egli le vede tutte riunite, ma gli manca l'amata fanciulla. Tutte le manda a cercarla in giro, lei è l'unica a cui tiene, ed ecco che giungono là, dove si struggeva in solitudine. Ma la cara fanciulla sta seduta muta e pallida, il capo reclino, ahimé! il mal d'amore e nostalgia ha sopraffatto la meschinella. Bucaneve, o campanellina che tintinni nei campi, tintinni nel bosco silente, risveglia Viola dal dolce riposo!
