Alle.
Hui! wie die Wolke
Von Staub und Brand
So wild sich stürzet
[Auf's]1 dürre Land!
Erster.
[Auf der Oasis]2
Heult' ich und lag,
[Konnt']3 sie nicht dörren
Den langen Tag.
Zweiter.
Mich trug der Wirbel
Vorbei die Fluth;
Ich schlürft' und schlürfte,
Und blieb doch Gluth.
Dritter.
Mir dörrt die Hitze
Den heisern Schlund,
Nur Blut mag kühlen
Den heißen Mund.
Alle.
Drum laßt uns wirbeln
Zum staub'gen Pfad,
Wo matt erlechzend
Der Wandrer naht.
[Den]4 heißen Odem
Er schlürft ihn ein,
Sein [starrend]5 Blut mag
Uns Kühlung seyn.

The spirits of the desert
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Hui! How wildly the burning clouds of dust
assaults this arid land!
Hui! On the oasis I lay, I howled and lay,
And it does not abate the day long.
The whirlwind drew me to the waters,
I lapped and lapped and the thirst remained.
The heat dries my hoarse throat,
Only blood can cool the hot mouth.
For that reason let us turn to the dusty path,
Where the traveler nears weakened by thirst.
Hui! With hot breath, he drinks noisily,
His strong blood may cool us!
