Enllà, sento cridar l’òliba, on els xiprers guarden el dol de les tombes, s’aixequen les boires de la Campagna i embolcallen portals i muralles; com una legió d’espectres tot s’agita i es belluga al voltant de la piràmide de Cesti, què deuen voler els morts? Adés, una llum tremola i flameja a l’entorn de la muntanya; els núvols grisos s’esbargeixen; amb un envejós rostre groc surt la lluna plena, brilla tan penetrant, tan esmorteïda, es reflexa al mig de la meva copa de vi, això no pot significar res de bo. I a qui s’ha hagut de separar de l’estimada encara se l’estima més, i qui s’està massa temps a l’aire de la nit agafa a Roma la febre. L’hostalera ja apaga les llànties – Felice notte! Me’n vaig a casa, la beguda la pagaré demà.
