hier in der Einsamkeit?
Wie in der Heimat klingen diese Glocken
Aus stiller Kinderzeit-
Ich wende mich erschrocken,
Ach, was mich liebt, ist weit!

So brecht hervor nur, alte Lieder,
Und brecht das Herz mir ab!
Noch einmal grüß ich aus der Ferne wieder,
Was ich nur Liebes hab,
Mich aber zieht es nieder
Vor Wehmut wie ins Grab.

Il bosco si fa dorato, le foglie cadono,
com'è desolato e muto!
I ruscelletti soli vanno per i faggeti,
scorrendo dolcemente come in sogno.
E le campane della sera risuonano
lontane dal limitare del bosco.

Perché volete attirarmi con tanta forza 
in questa solitudine?
Come al mio paese squillano queste campane
dalla quieta fanciullezza.
Io mi volgo sorpreso,
ahimè, ciò che mi amava è lontano!

E prorompete dunque, antichi canti,
e spezzatemi il cuore!
Un'altra volta ancora io saluto da lontano,
ciò che solo ho caro,
ma mi vince
la malinconia come nella tomba.
